Raised Food & Water Or No?
Raised food bowls can look like a fancy upgrade for your pet’s dining area, but are they actually better? Sometimes!
One benefit of a raised bowl is that it can be more comfortable for certain pets, especially older dogs or cats who have trouble bending down. A stand may also be helpful for pets with specific mobility issues or discomfort, but the ideal height should be based on the individual animal, not simply how tall they are.
Raised bowls can also make mealtime a little less messy! They may be easier for some pets to reach, and a sturdy stand can help keep the bowl from sliding around the floor. They can be especially convenient for homes with multiple pets or pets who tend to push their bowls across the room while eating.
But there are some potential downsides, too. A raised bowl can be awkward or uncomfortable if it’s too high, and some pets may simply prefer eating from the floor. Raised bowls also aren’t automatically safer for dogs. In fact, for dogs at risk of bloat or gastric dilatation-volvulus, elevated feeding has been identified as a possible risk factor, so it’s worth asking your veterinarian before switching to one.
The best choice is the one that allows your pet to eat comfortably, safely, and without having to stretch, hunch, or strain. If you do use a raised stand, make sure it’s stable, easy to clean, and the right height for your pet. Watch their posture and behavior during meals, because your pet will usually give you clues if something doesn’t feel right.
So, should every pet have a raised bowl? Not necessarily. Some pets love them, some don’t care, and others may benefit from one for a specific reason. When it comes to feeding accessories, comfort and individual needs matter more than following a trend.
As for my dog, he happens to love his raised bowl stand! He used to push his food bowl all around the house during mealtime, and now it stays put. Plus the removable bowls makes for easy cleaning. If you do go for a raised bowl stand, just be sure to get the height that works the best for your pet!
