Dog & Cat Cone Alternatives
The dreaded cone of shame. Some pets handle it like a professional, while others act like their entire life has been ruined.
The good news is that a traditional plastic cone isn't the only option. Depending on your pet and where the wound, incision, or irritated area is located, there may be a more comfortable alternative that still keeps them from licking or chewing.
An inflatable collar, sometimes called a donut collar (https://amzn.to/3UT9QsG), can be a softer option for some dogs and cats. Soft fabric cones (https://amzn.to/4yxLMtL) are another possibility, especially for pets who bump into everything with a hard plastic collar. After a week of my dog in a plastic cone, my legs were bruised from how many times he ran into me with that thing!
For certain surgeries or wounds on the body, a recovery suit or medical onesie (https://amzn.to/4r8dSJD) may work better because it covers the area instead of sitting around the neck. While aesthetics is definitely not the top priority with a cone, it doesn’t mean cute cones don’t exist (https://amzn.to/3Vfe3Hf)!
But here's the important part: not every alternative works for every pet or every injury. A recovery suit won't help if your pet needs to leave a leg or tail alone, and some flexible collars may still allow a determined pet to reach their incision. Cats can be especially talented little escape artists when they decide a medical device is unacceptable.
Before switching from the cone your veterinarian recommended, check with them about what will work for your pet's specific situation. Whatever option you use should be comfortable, properly fitted, and checked regularly for rubbing, slipping, or trapped moisture. Your pet should also be supervised when trying a new device to make sure they can't remove it or get around it.
The goal isn't necessarily to find the cutest or softest option, it's to find something your pet can tolerate while still protecting the area that needs to heal. Sometimes the classic cone really is the best choice, even if your pet strongly disagrees, but good to know it’s not your only option!
