Learning To Rest Is Best

We spend a lot of time thinking about how to keep our dogs entertained with walks, playtime, toys, training, enrichment, and adventures. And while all of those things are important, there's another skill that often gets overlooked: learning how to do nothing.

Dogs don't automatically know how to settle themselves when there's nothing going on. If they're constantly being entertained or given something to do whenever they become restless, they can start to expect that stimulation all the time. It’s kind of like how kids these days feel the constant pull of their phones when they’re bored.

Teaching your dog that boredom and quiet time are normal can help them become more comfortable relaxing on their own! This doesn't mean your dog should be ignored or left without exercise and enrichment. Dogs still need appropriate physical activity, social interaction, and mental stimulation. The goal is to find a healthy balance between doing and resting.

You can start small by giving your dog opportunities to simply hang out while you go about your day. Instead of immediately reaching for a toy when they seem bored, allow them some time to settle. Reward calm behavior when appropriate, and give them a comfortable place where they can relax without being constantly interrupted.

This can be especially valuable for puppies and young, high-energy dogs. Learning to settle can help them handle everyday situations where entertainment isn't available, like relaxing while you're working, sitting at a café or park, staying in a hotel, or simply hanging out at home.

And remember: a dog who is tired isn't necessarily a dog who knows how to rest. Sometimes the goal isn't to wear your dog out until they have no choice but to sleep. It's to teach them that relaxing is a normal and rewarding part of life, too.

Your dog doesn't need a full schedule of activities every day. Sometimes, learning to be bored is exactly what they need!
