Recall How To Recall?
I cannot stress enough how important training your dog’s recall is.
If you have a dog, then it’s likely you’ve already experienced the fear of when they escape off leash. It happened when my dog was just a 6 month old puppy, and he found a section in the fence just big enough to slip through. I learned quite a few lessons that day.
First, don’t underestimate your dog’s ability to squeak through small spaces.
Second, recall was probably the first thing I should have been training him on, after potty training of course.
I used to wonder how someone could even train recall safely in new environments if the dog didn’t have the skill yet. Turns out the answer was so simple: a long leash!
I’m talking like 20 or 30 feet at least —> https://amzn.to/4vUNRPm. You want your dog to really have that taste of freedom while working on recall. Because if they’re only coming back to you when they’re within a standard 6 foot leash radius, then you haven’t truly tested their recall ability yet.
Once you feel like your dog is getting recall down, then you can move onto off leash recall training BUT in a larger, maybe fenced in area. You really don’t want to allow your dog off leash access anywhere public until their recall is at 100%!
Even if you know your dog is friendly, it doesn’t mean other dogs, or people for that matter, will be. So it’s really important your dog isn’t running up to others unless given permission. It keeps everyone safe and happy!
