Sometimes Less Is More

While your dog can, and absolutely should drink water during and after exercise, be cautious to not allow your dog to chug or drink too much too quickly.

You’re trying to avoid stomach upset or vomiting, bloat risk in deep-chested breeds (rare but serious), or water intoxication (only with extreme overdrinking).

Instead, offer small amounts of water every few minutes, let them drink slowly until they’re satisfied, or simply wait 10–15 minutes after intense play to allow panting to slow down. After cooling off, you can allow regular access again.

I personally love bringing a portable water bowl for my dog on walks and hikes, especially on hot days (https://amzn.to/4oaiL3F). These allow my dog to have small amounts of water throughout his walks and limit his desire to overdrink once he’s all done.
