Myth Or Fact? Dogs Hate Hugs

We love our dogs, so it's natural to want to show them affection with a big hug. But you've probably heard that dogs don't like being hugged because they can feel trapped. So is that actually true?

Not necessarily! Every dog is different. Some dogs genuinely enjoy cuddling and may lean into you, stay relaxed, or even seek out physical affection. Others may find being wrapped in someone's arms uncomfortable because they can't easily move away.

The important thing is learning to read your dog's body language. If your dog becomes stiff, turns their head away, pins their ears back, licks their lips, yawns, or tries to move away during a hug, they're likely telling you they're uncomfortable. And remember, a dog staying still doesn't necessarily mean they're enjoying it. Freezing can also be a sign of stress.

Instead of assuming your dog loves hugs because they tolerate them, give them opportunities to choose how they want to interact. Some dogs prefer a chest rub, a scratch behind the ears, or simply lying next to you without being touched. If they lean into you or come back for more affection, that's a pretty good sign they're enjoying the interaction.

There's nothing wrong with loving on your dog! Just remember that affection is a two-way street. The best way to show your dog you love them is to pay attention to what they're telling you.
