Stop and Smell the Roses
When we think about walking our dogs, it's easy to focus on distance and speed to burn off energy. But for dogs, a walk is about so much more than just exercise! Of course, exercise is important as well, it’s just even better to have a healthy balance of mental and physical exercise.
Their noses are their primary way of exploring the world, and allowing them time to sniff is one of the best forms of enrichment you can provide. A "sniff walk" is exactly what it sounds like, a walk where your dog is encouraged to stop, investigate scents, and take in their surroundings at their own pace. Every mailbox, tree, patch of grass, and fire hydrant holds a wealth of information. Through scent, dogs can learn about other animals that have passed by, changes in their environment, and so much more. It's their version of reading the morning news!
Not only do sniff walks satisfy your dog's natural instincts, but they also provide incredible mental stimulation. Using the nose requires concentration and problem-solving, which can leave many dogs feeling more relaxed and fulfilled than a fast-paced walk where they're constantly encouraged to keep moving. For some dogs, 20 minutes of sniffing can be just as enriching as a much longer walk.
The best part is that sniff walks don't have to be complicated. Choose a safe area, use a comfortable harness and leash, and let your dog lead the way whenever it's safe to do so. Instead of focusing on how far you walk, focus on giving your dog the freedom to explore.
If your dog loves to sniff but the weather keeps you indoors, activities like snuffle mats (https://link.amazon/B01xhTVnN), or hide-and-seek with treats, are great alternatives.
The next time you head outside, try slowing down and seeing the world through your dog's nose. You may not cover as much ground, but you'll be giving your furry friend something they value even more: the opportunity to explore, learn, and engage with the world in the way that nurtures the brain!
